Organic Chicken feed

Where can I buy organic chicken feed?

You will have to grow your own organic chicken feed – as far as I know there are no suppliers of truly organic chicken food. The organic regulations state that you have to grow 60% of the chicken feed in any case – and as there are no suppliers in South Africa who will guarantee that the chicken feed is 100% organic, it means you must grow all of the food for your chickens. New studies show that Organic farms could have reduced levels of drug-resistant bacteria – which is all the more reason to go organic! Free range chicken houses and organic chicken houses are required to raise chickens in this fashion.

Free range eggs at home

Growing free range eggs or organic eggs at home is not difficult. With 5 or 6 hens you can get 20 eggs a week. If you let the chickens free range, looking after them is much easier. You need a bit of space – at least one square meter per chicken. Some laying boxes and a protected place for the hens to sleep. A small chicken coop is not expensive to build and the food will cost about 60 cents per egg. If you have a hardy breed of chicken they will almost look after themselves.

You won’t need a cockerel – the chickens lay the eggs anyway – you would only use a cock if you were growing eggs for purposes of chicks. You can use your organic vegetable scrap. The chickens will eat damaged vegetables form your organic vegetable garden. Everything ties together and you get free range eggs… and to all accounts oragnic eggs at home.
