Growing Organic Vegetables at home is not as easy as everyone would have you think. In fact growing vegetables at home is also quite a thing. Preparing beds etc. is just hard work – what is difficult is finding those vegetable which thrive where you are growing, and those that will please your family. The next difficult part is getting your growing cycles and quantities right so that you do not end up with flood or famine.
In my experience, flood and famine happen often – often of the wrong vegetables – for instance, I dislike cabbage, it grows well we are – how do I always end up with way, way too many.
The solution is in working with others – preferably neighbours. Trade vegetables but be prepared to give your excesses away. The idyllic thought of “we’ll just bottle it, or freeze it, or can it, make jams, and a hundred other ideas – they all require work and knowledge – which makes me question the concept of “I’ll grow a few veggies”.
Having said that – growing vegetables, organic or otherwise, is very rewarding, spending time outside – with the kids if you have, and many other factors. Organic farming stretches to other products – like chickens and eggs – I have started keeping a few chickens in a chicken house, and am collecting 7 eggs a day. Start with you favorite vegetables and give it a try. Growing organic vegetables means that you cannot use chemicals and certain fertalisers. Guess what – bugs and beasties will enjoy your organic efforts more than you like. Be prepared to get less than perfect food – it’s the real deal and will have all the right planet saving credentials. The taste, though, is fantastic.
